Are there alternatives to laser whitening of enamel?
Yes.  Some patients, especially those with severely stained teeth, may want to consider porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.  With these methods, we are not trying to restore whiteness in natural enamel, but instead covering enamel with porcelain material, which is highly resistant to future staining.  These options may work well for patients who cannot achieve desired results from laser tooth whitening.  However, these alternatives are also more costly. 

Are there side effects to laser whitening?
Laser tooth whitening may cause soreness of the teeth and gums in some patients, although any negative effects will be temporary.  If you experience sensitivity, you may want to follow-up your laser whitening treatment with sensitive toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. 

How long will my laser tooth whitening results last?
Patients experienced mixed time lines with laser whitening.  Depending on the health and current shade of your teeth, your home care and lifestyle, whitening effects can last from 6 months to over a year.  Many laser whitening patients come in for “touch-up” whitening treatments every 4 – 6 months.
